How to Plan a Campervan Conversion Properly

An empty van makes every layout look possible. That changes as soon as you account for wheel arches, door swings, bed length, water tanks, wiring runs and the weight of every item you fit. Learning how to plan a campervan conversion properly before ordering materials is the difference between a usable build and an expensive sequence of alterations.
The plan does not need to be a polished CAD drawing. It does need to answer practical questions: who will use the van, where will it be used, what must it carry, and what work needs to happen before the walls and furniture close everything in.
Start with the way the van will be used
Plan around real trips rather than an idealised layout. A weekend surf van, a couple’s touring van and a full-time mobile workspace can all start with the same panel van but require very different systems.
Consider how many people need to travel and sleep in it, whether you need a permanent bed, how often you will cook inside, and whether you expect to spend nights away from mains power. Wet clothing, bikes, dogs, work tools and winter touring all affect the storage, ventilation and heating requirements. A van used mainly on campsites can manage with a simpler electrical system than one intended for regular off-grid stops.
Write down the non-negotiables first. This may be a fixed bed long enough for a tall user, a clear walkway for a dog, secure storage for climbing equipment, or a fridge that can run for several days. Everything else is a compromise between space, cost, weight and build time.
Measure the vehicle, then measure it again
Do not design from a generic floor plan found online. Even vans from the same model range vary by wheelbase, roof height, trim, bulkhead position and existing factory fittings. Measure the internal length at floor and waist height, width between wheel arches, roof height, door apertures and the location of ribs, wiring, fuel lines and structural members.
Make a simple scaled drawing of the floor, side elevations and rear doors. Mark the wheel arches, sliding-door opening, pillars and areas where a window could be fitted. Cardboard templates are useful for testing furniture footprints, particularly around the kitchen and bed.
Allow for the finished thickness of the build. Sound deadening, insulation, battens, wall lining and upholstery can reduce internal width noticeably. A transverse bed that looks workable in an empty van may become too short once the walls are finished. Likewise, a tall cupboard can obstruct a door or prevent a seat from swivelling.
Check weights before choosing components
Payload is a design limit, not an afterthought. Find the vehicle’s maximum authorised mass and calculate the available payload after allowing for passengers, fuel, water, equipment and the conversion itself. Heavy items such as plywood furniture, leisure batteries, water tanks, fridges and awnings add up quickly.
Place the heaviest loads low down and close to the axle area where practical. Avoid building a layout that puts too much weight behind the rear axle or concentrates mass on one side. If your intended finished weight could approach the vehicle limit, consider a weighbridge check during the build rather than waiting until everything is installed.
Set the budget in stages, not as one large number
A realistic budget should separate the work into build stages. It is easy to spend heavily on furniture or appliances and then discover there is not enough left for the unseen work that makes the van comfortable and reliable.
Allow for preparation and treatment, sound deadening, insulation, vapour management where appropriate, windows and vents, electrical equipment, plumbing, gas equipment, lining materials, flooring, furniture, appliances, fixings and finishing items. Also include tools, consumables, delivery costs and a contingency. Screws, cable clips, sealant, trim, rivnuts and blade replacements are small purchases individually, but they are part of the job.
Decide early where buying once is sensible. Quality insulation, correctly sized cable, suitable circuit protection and properly installed ventilation are not good places to cut corners. A decorative panel or cushion fabric is easier to upgrade later than hidden wiring behind a finished wall.
Plan the build order before buying materials
A campervan conversion is much easier when each job leaves access for the next one. Fitting furniture before installing cable routes, or lining a wall before deciding where a window goes, creates unnecessary rework.
A typical order begins with cleaning, rust treatment and any mechanical work. Then consider external openings such as windows, roof vents and service inlets. Sound-deadening material can be applied to selected large metal panels to reduce panel resonance, followed by thermal insulation in the appropriate cavities. Avoid packing insulation so tightly that it loses effectiveness or interferes with moving parts and drainage routes.
Next comes the first-fix work: electrical cables, conduit, water pipe runs, heater ducting and any mounting plates required behind the lining. Photograph every route before covering it. These photographs will save time when adding an accessory or tracing a fault later.
After that, fit the floor, wall and ceiling linings, then install furniture, appliances and final electrical connections. The exact sequence depends on the vehicle and layout, but the principle remains the same: complete work that will be hidden before closing a surface.
Design the electrical system around actual loads
Start with an appliance list, not a battery size. Note the likely running time for the fridge, lights, water pump, charging points, heater controls, fans and any higher-demand equipment. Then decide how the battery will be charged: while driving, from mains hook-up, from solar, or through a combination of these.
The required battery capacity depends on your usage and charging opportunity. A van that drives daily may need less stored energy than one parked off-grid for several days. Battery chemistry, cable sizes, fusing, charging equipment and ventilation requirements must work as one system. Do not hide joints where they cannot be inspected, and leave access to fuses, isolators and battery terminals.
For 230V work, use suitable equipment and obtain competent professional help where needed. The same applies to gas installation. A neat finish is not evidence of a safe installation.
Give water, cooking and ventilation equal attention
A sink and hob arrangement should be planned alongside fresh water, waste water, gas storage and ventilation, not selected as standalone products. Think about where the water tank will sit when full, how the waste water will drain, and whether the pipework can be protected from frost and accidental damage.
Ventilation is essential in every layout, especially where cooking, sleeping and drying wet kit happen in a small space. A roof vent, opening window or other planned airflow route helps control condensation and improves comfort. If you are fitting gas appliances, follow the relevant requirements for ventilation, locker construction and safe routing rather than adapting a household-kitchen approach.
Make storage part of the structure
Most poor layouts do not fail because they lack cupboards. They fail because the storage has no assigned purpose. Plan secure places for recovery gear, clothing, food, bedding, levelling ramps, electrical leads and dirty equipment. Items used at every stop should be reachable without dismantling the bed or emptying half a cupboard.
Use removable access panels where pumps, tanks, battery equipment or isolation valves need maintenance. Furniture can look built-in while still allowing access to the systems behind it. Check legality, safety and serviceability
Before finalising the plan, check that seat bases, seat belts and travelling seats are suitable for their intended use. Do not drill, cut or attach loads to structural areas without understanding the implications. Window installations, roof apertures and external gas or electrical connections should be planned around the vehicle structure and manufacturers’ fitting instructions.
Build in a final inspection stage. Test every electrical circuit, fill and drain the water system, check for leaks, operate every drawer with the doors closed, and take the van for a short drive to identify rattles. A conversion is not finished when the last panel is fitted. It is finished when it works safely, can be maintained, and suits the trips you actually take.
A good plan leaves room for adjustment, but it prevents the costly adjustments. Begin with the vehicle, your real usage and the hidden systems, then choose the furniture and finishing details that make the space work for you.
