A Campervan Conversion in the Right Order

An empty panel van makes it tempting to start with the visible work: a bed frame, a neat kitchen pod or wall panels. That is how expensive rework starts. A successful campervan conversion is built in a sequence that keeps hidden jobs accessible, controls condensation and leaves enough room for the systems you will rely on when the weather turns.

The right order varies between a weekend surf van and a full-time touring vehicle, but the principles do not. Decide how the van will be used, prepare the shell properly, deal with noise and heat, install services, then fit the interior around them. Finishings come last because they are the easiest part to change.

Start the campervan conversion with a proper brief

Before buying materials, establish the non-negotiables. How many people will sleep in the van? Will it be used mainly for summer weekends, winter trips or extended travel? Do you need a fixed bed, belted travel seats, a toilet, off-grid power or only enough storage for bikes and climbing gear?

These answers affect every dimension. A compressor fridge needs ventilation, battery capacity and cable routes. A sink and hob need water storage, drainage, gas provision and safe clearances. A large fixed bed creates simple sleeping arrangements but consumes space that could otherwise become seating or storage.

Measure the vehicle, including the narrow points around wheel arches, door apertures and roof ribs. Make a scaled layout before ordering furniture or cutting boards. Also check the vehicle payload. Insulation, ply lining, water, batteries, appliances and passengers add up quickly. A conversion that looks tidy but exceeds its plated weight is not fit for purpose.

Prepare the van shell before covering anything

Strip the load area and inspect it with the interior exposed. Remove old adhesive, loose coatings and any previous DIY wiring that cannot be identified. Treat corrosion now, including small areas around floor seams, window apertures and fixing points. Once insulation and furniture are installed, these jobs become slower and messier.

Clean and degrease the panels before applying sound-deadening sheets. These products work best when bonded firmly to clean metal, not dust, oil or flaky paint. You do not need to cover every square inch of the van. Target broad, resonant sections such as side panels, sliding doors, roof areas and large floor sections. The aim is to reduce panel vibration and road noise, not to add unnecessary weight.

Plan any holes in the bodywork at this stage. Windows, roof vents, external electrical inlets and certain heater fittings should be positioned before the walls are closed up. Cutting into a finished van risks damaging new linings and makes it harder to protect bare edges correctly. Measure repeatedly, use the right cutting tools and seal exposed metal as specified for the installation.

Insulation is about condensation as well as warmth

A campervan is a small metal box containing people, wet coats, cooking steam and cold surfaces. In UK conditions, condensation management matters as much as retaining heat. Sound deadening reduces vibration; it is not a substitute for thermal insulation.

Use a suitable thermal insulation system across the floor, walls, roof and cavities where practical. The exact material and thickness depend on available space, the intended climate and the van’s construction. Thick insulation may improve thermal performance, but it can reduce internal width around a bed or restrict headroom beneath a roof lining. In a compact van, choosing where to prioritise thickness is often more useful than applying the same build-up everywhere.

Avoid leaving uninsulated metal bridges where possible, particularly behind furniture and around structural ribs. Do not pack cavities so tightly that moisture has nowhere to dry, and do not assume insulation means ventilation can be ignored. A roof vent, opening windows and sensible airflow are essential when sleeping or cooking. Warm air carrying moisture must have a route out of the vehicle.

Install electrical, water and gas systems while access is open

Once the shell treatment and insulation plan are in place, run cables, pipework and ducting before fitting permanent wall and ceiling linings. Draw the routes first. Label cables at both ends, protect them where they pass through metal and keep future access in mind. A hidden cable with no identification becomes a problem the first time a fuse blows or an accessory is added.

Your electrical design should begin with actual use rather than the size of a battery advertised online. List the loads: fridge, lights, water pump, USB charging, diesel heater, inverter and any work equipment. Estimate how long each item will run, then size batteries, charging equipment, cable protection and distribution accordingly. A basic day van may need modest 12V capacity; a vehicle supporting remote work may need a far more considered system.

Fresh water and waste water storage need equally practical planning. Tanks must be secure, protected from damage and accessible for cleaning or draining. Internal tanks are less exposed to frost but take up useful space. Underslung tanks preserve room inside but need careful protection and can be unsuitable for regular winter use.

Gas work and high-current electrical installations are not areas for guesswork. Follow applicable requirements, use approved components and obtain qualified help where the installation falls outside your competence. The same applies to heaters and combustion appliances. Safe routing, ventilation, isolation and testing are more valuable than saving a few hours during the build.

Fit windows, linings and furniture to the finished plan

Windows can transform a dark load area, but their position should support the layout rather than simply fill an empty panel. A window beside the bed gives light and ventilation. A window behind a kitchen unit may be partly wasted, while one placed where wall-mounted storage is planned can complicate the interior. Consider privacy too, especially if the van will be used for overnight stops rather than campsites.

Fit ceiling and wall linings only once the hidden services have been checked. Test every light, pump, charger, appliance feed and fan before closing the structure. Photograph cable and pipe runs as you go. A set of dated photographs and measurements can save hours when you later need to fit a hook, replace a panel or diagnose a fault.

Furniture should be fixed into suitable structural points or properly engineered support, not merely screwed into thin lining board. Weight distribution matters. Keep dense items such as batteries, water tanks and heavy storage low down and as close to the vehicle’s centre as practical. Ensure drawers, doors and removable pods cannot move under braking.

A made-to-order interior can be worthwhile when a standard pod leaves awkward unused space, when the vehicle has a specific purpose, or when you need the kitchen, storage and bed system to work together. For simpler builds, modular furniture can reduce fabrication time and make future changes easier. Neither route is automatically better; it depends on the layout, budget and how permanent you want the conversion to be.

Choose appliances for real-world use

A compact sink and hob are useful only if they suit the way you cook and clean. Some owners need a larger worktop more than a second burner. Others would rather allocate space to a decent fridge/freezer because they travel for longer without shopping. Check appliance dimensions, ventilation requirements, electrical draw and service access before committing to cabinetry.

Do not build an appliance into a sealed box and assume it can be dealt with later. Fridges require airflow around their installation, pumps need access, and isolation valves or fuses should be reachable without dismantling half the van. Practical access panels are not glamorous, but they are a mark of a build designed to be maintained.

Finish for use, not just photographs

With the structure complete, fit flooring, trim, cushions, catches and the small storage details that make the space work day to day. Choose durable, wipeable surfaces where wet gear or cooking is involved. Check every cupboard latch on a rough road, every bed support under load and every opening door with the sliding door shut.

Before the first long trip, spend a night in the van close to home. Cook a meal, charge devices, run the water system and note where condensation forms by morning. That short test will expose the missing hook, awkward drawer, insufficient light or ventilation issue that no drawing can fully predict.

A campervan conversion does not need to be finished all at once. Build the safe, weatherproof and functional core first, then let a few real journeys tell you what deserves the next improvement.
