Choosing a Campervan Fridge Freezer That Fits

A campervan fridge freezer earns its space every day you are away from a mains hook-up. It keeps milk cold, protects fresh food, reduces reliance on daily shop stops and gives you more flexibility when travelling beyond busy campsites. Get the size, power supply or installation wrong, however, and it can become one of the biggest drains on your electrical system.
For most modern van conversions, a 12V compressor fridge is the practical starting point. The right unit is not necessarily the largest one you can fit. It is the one that matches the way you use the van, the available cupboard space and the battery capacity you can realistically support.
Choosing a campervan fridge freezer
Start with your actual usage rather than a headline litre figure. A couple using the van for weekends, stopping at shops regularly and eating out occasionally can manage well with a compact fridge of around 40 to 50 litres. A larger 50 to 85 litre unit makes more sense for longer trips, families, off-grid stays or anyone who wants to carry several days of fresh food.
A freezer compartment is useful, but it has a cost. Freezing food requires more energy than simple refrigeration, particularly in warm weather or when the door is opened frequently. A small icebox is enough for ice packs, frozen vegetables and a few essentials. A true fridge freezer with a separately controlled freezer section suits longer trips, but it calls for a more considered electrical setup.
Do not judge capacity by litres alone. Check the internal layout. Shelves, bottle storage, salad drawers and freezer space affect what the fridge will hold in practice. A narrow unit may fit a conversion pod neatly but struggle with upright bottles. A wider chest-style fridge can be efficient and accessible in the right layout, although it needs a suitable top-opening location and can make access to other furniture more awkward.
Compressor or absorption?
For a typical UK campervan conversion, a 12V compressor fridge is usually the sensible option. It cools effectively while the van is parked, works at a slight angle and can run directly from a leisure battery. It is also well suited to solar-supported electrical systems.
Three-way absorption fridges can operate on gas, 12V and mains electricity. They have their place in certain caravan and motorhome installations, but they are less straightforward in a compact van. Their 12V mode can draw substantial current, their cooling performance can be affected by heat and levelling, and gas installation requires careful, compliant design. For a self-built or compact campervan, the simplicity of a compressor fridge is often worth more than the ability to use multiple fuels.
Measure the appliance, not the gap
Before ordering, measure the installation area in three directions and allow room for the door, cable route and ventilation. Check the product dimensions against your finished furniture dimensions, not just the empty van shell. Insulation, lining, battens, worktop thickness and door fronts all reduce the space available.
Pay close attention to door clearance. A fridge door that opens only part way because it hits a swivel seat, bed board or cabinet handle soon becomes irritating. Reversible doors can solve some layouts, while drawer fridges and top-opening units work better in others.
Weight also matters. A fridge freezer is not the heaviest item in a conversion, but its position can affect how the van feels when loaded. Keep heavier appliances low down and secure them properly to a substantial part of the furniture structure. A fridge should not rely on a thin decorative panel or a few screws into lightweight ply.
Power draw and battery planning
Fridge power figures are often misunderstood. A compressor does not run continuously, so its daily consumption is more useful than its peak current draw. Usage changes with ambient temperature, thermostat setting, ventilation, how full the fridge is and how often it is opened.
As a practical guide, calculate your battery system around daily consumption in amp hours or watt hours, then add a sensible margin. A fridge may be modest overnight in cool weather but work much harder in a sealed van on a hot day. If you also run lights, water pumps, USB charging, a diesel heater and a laptop, the fridge must be considered as part of the whole electrical load rather than in isolation.
Lithium leisure batteries offer more usable capacity than lead-acid types of the same rated size, but battery choice is only one part of the system. Consider how the battery will be charged while driving, whether solar is fitted, how long you plan to stay off-grid and whether you have access to mains electric hook-up. A large fridge paired with a small battery and no charging plan is a poor combination.
Cable sizing and fuse protection need to be correct. Compressor fridges can be sensitive to voltage drop, especially where a long cable run or undersized wiring causes the supply voltage to fall when the compressor starts. Fit a dedicated fused circuit, use appropriately sized cable for the run and follow the appliance manufacturer's installation instructions. If you are unsure, have the 12V circuit designed or checked by a competent installer.
Usable capacity is not the same as battery capacity
A 100Ah battery does not automatically provide 100Ah of useable power. The battery chemistry, discharge limits, battery condition and other loads all affect what is safely available. This is why working from a realistic daily energy budget is more reliable than simply matching a fridge to the largest battery that fits under the seat.
Solar can extend off-grid time considerably during brighter months, but it should not be treated as guaranteed daily output. UK weather, parking under trees, roof-mounted equipment and winter sun angles all reduce generation. Build enough stored capacity for the conditions you expect, then treat solar as valuable recharge support.
Fitting your campervan fridge freezer correctly
Ventilation is central to performance. A compressor fridge moves heat from inside the cabinet to the surrounding air. If that heat is trapped behind a tightly boxed-in appliance, the compressor runs longer, battery use rises and cooling suffers.
Leave the clearance specified by the manufacturer around the condenser and ventilation openings. Provide a route for cool air to enter and warm air to escape rather than creating a dead pocket behind the fridge. The exact arrangement depends on whether the unit is front-vented, rear-vented or fitted with a separate compressor, so follow the appliance requirements rather than copying a layout from another build.
Avoid placing the fridge beside a heat source where possible. A hob, oven, diesel heater duct or sun-facing metal panel can all increase its workload. Good insulation in the van helps too. Insulating the floor, walls and roof before installing furniture makes the entire living space easier to heat and cool, and it reduces the heat load on refrigeration during warmer spells.
Secure the appliance for travel. Use the fixing points supplied by the manufacturer where provided, and make sure the surrounding cabinet is properly anchored to the vehicle. The door latch must remain closed on uneven roads. Test it before the interior is fully finished, particularly if you are fitting custom cabinetry around the fridge.
Set it up for everyday use
Run the fridge for several hours before loading it with food. Pre-chill drinks and food at home when possible, rather than expecting the unit to pull everything down from room temperature on battery power. Keep airflow clear inside the fridge and avoid packing it so tightly that cold air cannot circulate.
Set the temperature conservatively. A fridge section should generally stay cold enough to store food safely, but turning it to its coldest setting by default wastes power and may freeze items close to the cooling plate. Use a small fridge thermometer to check actual temperature, as dial markings are not always precise.
Open the door with a plan. It sounds basic, but frequent door opening is one of the easiest ways to increase power use. In a compact van kitchen, arrange dry goods, cutlery and cooking equipment so you are not repeatedly opening the fridge while preparing a meal.
When a larger unit is worth it
There is no benefit in forcing a small fridge into a van that is intended for long independent trips. If you travel with children, carry specialist food, work from the van or prefer quiet locations away from shops, a larger fridge freezer can make the vehicle far more practical. The trade-off is space, weight and electrical demand, so plan those systems together from the beginning.
For shorter breaks, a modest compressor fridge with a small freezer compartment often gives the best balance. It leaves more room for water storage, batteries, cooking equipment and usable cupboard space. In a compact conversion, every appliance should justify both the physical volume it takes up and the power it consumes.
Choose the fridge freezer early in the build, then design the cabinet, wiring, ventilation and battery system around its actual specification.
