A van does not need every square inch covered in heavy material to sound better. It needs damping applied to the panels that ring, drum and transmit vibration. This Dodo DEAD-EZY installation guide sets out where to place the material, how to prepare the van, and how to fit it properly before insulation and lining go in.

Dodo DEAD-EZY is a self-adhesive vibration-damping sheet. Its job is to reduce resonance in thin vehicle panels, not to provide thermal insulation or replace a proper acoustic barrier. Used in the right places, it helps take the hollow, tinny edge out of roof, wall, door and floor panels. It is one part of the build sequence, and it works best when fitted directly to clean metal.

Plan the sound-deadening stage first

Sound deadening belongs early in a campervan conversion. Fit it after any rust repairs, cleaning and structural work, but before thermal insulation, timber battens, wiring covers and wall linings. Once insulation is installed, there is no sensible way to bond damping sheet to the metal without pulling work back out.

Start by assessing the bare shell. Large, flat areas are usually the priority: the centre sections of side panels, the roof skin, wheel arches, cab doors and broad floor sections. Tap each panel with your knuckles. A sharp, hollow ring usually identifies a panel that will benefit from damping. A panel with bracing ribs may still resonate between the ribs, so treat the open sections rather than trying to cover the strengthening members themselves.

Coverage is not an all-or-nothing job. For most camper builds, strategic coverage of the larger panels is more effective and more economical than covering every accessible metal surface. Full coverage adds weight and cost, while the gains become smaller once the main resonant areas have been treated. The right amount depends on the vehicle, the intended use and how much road noise you are prepared to accept.

A weekend van used mainly on shorter journeys may need less treatment than a full-time camper or a professionally converted vehicle where road refinement matters. Wheel arches and cab doors deserve more attention on vans that see frequent motorway mileage.

Tools and materials for fitting Dodo DEAD-EZY

Preparation makes the difference between a sheet that stays bonded for years and one that lifts at the corners. Keep the work area dry and make sure the van is at a workable temperature. In cold conditions, self-adhesive damping material becomes less flexible, so warm the sheets gently before fitting if necessary. Do not apply material to wet, frosted or heavily contaminated metal.

For a straightforward installation, have the following ready:

  • Dodo DEAD-EZY sheets sized for the areas being treated
  • A firm roller for applying even pressure
  • Panel wipe or a suitable degreaser and clean lint-free cloths
  • A utility knife or strong scissors, plus a marker and tape measure
  • Gloves and eye protection for cutting and working around bare panels
Remove loose dust, adhesive residue, oily fingerprints and any traces of wax from the intended surface. A quick wipe is not enough if the panel has been handled during other work. Degrease it, allow it to dry fully, and avoid touching the cleaned section before the sheet is applied.

Check for rust, damaged paint and old sealant at this stage. Sound-deadening material should not be used to hide corrosion. Deal with rust correctly, repair and protect the affected area, then apply damping only once the surface is stable and dry.

Measure the target area before peeling the backing paper. Smaller, manageable pieces are usually easier to place around ribs, apertures and curved sections than one large sheet. They are also less likely to trap air during fitting. There is no need for perfect geometric coverage, but avoid leaving loose corners or bridging across deep recesses.

Cut the material to shape, allowing clearance around factory holes, drain points, fixing locations and wiring routes. Do not cover water drains in doors, low points in body panels, cable grommets, inspection points or labels that may be needed later. Keep clear of moving mechanisms, especially inside cab and sliding doors.

Peel back only part of the release liner first. Position the exposed edge, press it into place, then gradually remove the remaining backing as you work across the panel. This gives better control than exposing the whole adhesive face at once, particularly on the roof or on a large side panel.

Once positioned, use the roller to work from the centre of the sheet out towards the edges. Apply firm, even pressure so the material follows the panel and bonds across its full surface. The aim is to eliminate air pockets and ensure contact with the metal, not simply to flatten the sheet. Pay close attention to edges, corners and areas around stamped shapes.

A roller is preferable to pressing by hand alone. Fingers can make the material look fitted while leaving small unbonded sections underneath. Those voids reduce the effectiveness of the treatment and can allow corners to lift later, especially where a panel flexes.

For tight curves and complex pressings, cut the sheet into narrower strips or smaller sections. Forcing a large piece over sharp contours can leave tension in the material. It may appear sound on the day of fitting, then pull back once the vehicle experiences temperature changes and vibration.

Where to use it in a campervan

Side panels are a good starting point because they form large, lightly supported areas behind furniture and lining. Apply pieces to the broad flat sections between ribs, then leave room for your planned insulation and fixing method. If you are installing a kitchen pod, bed system or other furniture against a wall, do not assume the furniture alone will stop panel vibration. Damping the accessible metal first is still worthwhile.

The roof is another high-value area, particularly in high-roof vans. Treat the large sections between roof bows, keeping clear of wiring routes for lights, fans and solar-related cable entries. Working overhead is easier with smaller pieces and a second person to support and position material where required.

Wheel arches transmit a significant amount of tyre and road noise. Treat the interior-facing metal where it is accessible, then continue with suitable insulation and lining methods appropriate to that area. Do not obstruct any factory fittings or rely on damping sheet as protection against moisture or wheel-arch impact.

Cab doors can improve noticeably when their outer skins and accessible inner sections are treated carefully. Keep all drains open and do not interfere with window runners, locking rods, speakers, wiring looms or moisture barriers. Door work takes longer because access is limited, but it can make motorway driving less tiring.

The floor can be treated before insulation and the final subfloor are installed, especially across broad areas that drum underfoot. Avoid covering threaded mounting points, seat fixings, access panels or channels needed for wiring. If the vehicle is being used for a more involved conversion, plan every floor penetration before closing the area up.

Common fitting mistakes to avoid

The most common mistake is treating sound deadening as insulation. Dodo DEAD-EZY reduces panel vibration; it does not replace a thermal insulation layer. A quieter panel can still lose heat quickly in cold weather, and a well-insulated van can still sound noisy if its large metal skins are left to resonate. Use each material for its intended job.

Another mistake is applying sheets to dirty metal. Even strong adhesive cannot compensate for wax, dust or oily residue. Take the extra few minutes to clean every panel properly.

Overlapping sheets heavily is also unnecessary. Butt the pieces closely where practical, or leave small gaps where contours demand it. The goal is good contact on key resonant surfaces, not creating multiple layers of weight. Likewise, do not use damping sheet to bridge large voids, cover sharp exposed edges or secure loose cables.

Finally, avoid fitting it without considering the next stage of the build. Plan insulation thickness, cable runs, window cut-outs, furniture mounting points and lining panels before committing to the layout. This keeps the shell tidy and prevents stripping out sound-deadening material later to reach a missed cable route or mounting point.

Check the installation before insulating

When the panels are complete, inspect every fitted section. Edges should be fully bonded, there should be no visible air pockets, and all drains, holes and service routes should remain usable. Tap the treated metal again. It should sound duller and less metallic than the untreated sections around it.

At this point, move on to the insulation system, vapour-management approach where appropriate, wiring, battens and interior lining.
