A van can look finished long before it feels usable in February. Cold steel panels, wind noise and condensation will quickly expose a poor insulation job. The best thermal insulation van materials are not simply the thickest products you can fit. They need to suit the shape of the vehicle, the available cavity depth and the way the van will be used.
For most UK campervan builds, the reliable approach is a layered one: sound-deaden the large vibrating panels where required, fit a moisture-resistant thermal layer against the metal, insulate deeper voids without compressing the material, then seal the warm side carefully before lining. Get that sequence right and the interior will be quieter, warmer and easier to heat.
What insulation needs to do in a campervan
Van insulation has two separate jobs. The first is slowing heat transfer through the roof, sides, doors and floor. The second is limiting condensation, which forms when warm, damp interior air reaches cold vehicle metal.
Neither job is solved by stuffing every cavity with a single material. A product can have good thermal performance but be awkward around ribs, wiring and curved panels. Another may fit neatly but offer limited insulation value on its own. The best result comes from assigning each material to the area where it works properly.
Ventilation still matters. Insulation reduces heat loss and helps control cold surfaces, but it cannot remove moisture produced by breathing, cooking or drying wet clothes. Roof ventilation and sensible airflow are part of the same system.

Closed-cell foam for direct-to-metal areas
Closed-cell foam is one of the most useful materials in a campervan because it follows curved panels and creates a thermal break between the interior and the steel body. It is particularly effective on roof sections, side panels, sliding doors and awkward recesses where rigid board will not sit flat.
Choose a purpose-made automotive thermal liner with a closed-cell structure and a suitable adhesive backing. It should be applied to clean, dry metal after any sound-deadening treatment. Cover broad exposed areas rather than attempting to wrap every rib, drain channel or moving mechanism.
Its main advantage is moisture resistance. Unlike absorbent materials, it will not readily hold water against the bodywork if the van is well built and leaks are dealt with. The limitation is thickness: thin closed-cell foam is excellent as a thermal break, but it is not a substitute for deeper insulation in large cavities.
Recycled plastic or loft-style fibre for deep voids
Recycled plastic fibre insulation works well in the larger spaces behind wall and ceiling linings. It is lightweight, easy to trim and can be packed around irregular shapes without leaving large cold gaps. It is a practical choice for rear doors, upper side cavities and roof voids where there is enough depth to gain a useful insulating layer.
Do not compress it tightly. Compression reduces the trapped air that gives fibrous insulation much of its thermal performance. Cut pieces to fill the cavity lightly, and leave access around wiring routes, door mechanisms and factory drainage points.
This material should not be pushed directly against bare outer skin as the only layer. Use closed-cell foam against the metal first, then add fibre insulation where depth allows. It is also worth checking that the product is suitable for vehicle use and does not shed excessively during installation.
PIR board for flat, accessible sections
PIR insulation board provides strong thermal performance for its thickness. It is a sensible option beneath a raised floor, inside flat cabinet plinths or on relatively straight sections where it can be cut accurately and retained securely.
The trade-off is fitment. Most vans are curved, ribbed and full of service runs, so rigid board can leave voids around the edges if used indiscriminately. Those voids become cold bridges and can allow warm air to reach the bodywork. PIR also needs careful cutting, particularly around cables and gas or water services.
For a floor, use boards that are compatible with the load-bearing structure above them. Insulation alone is not a suitable base for furniture or walking surfaces. The finished floor should spread loads through a properly supported plywood deck or batten framework, without crushing the insulation.
Sheep wool and natural fibre insulation
Natural wool insulation appeals to builders who want a more natural material and good acoustic absorption. It can manage small amounts of humidity within its fibres and is pleasant to handle compared with some conventional insulation products.
It is not automatically the best choice for every van. The product needs to be treated appropriately against pests and should be installed where it cannot become saturated by a leak or trapped against wet metal. In a vehicle that sees regular winter use, a closed-cell layer against the body remains a sensible precaution.
Natural fibres are generally most useful as a secondary cavity fill, not as the only defence against condensation. They can be effective, but the quality of installation and vapour control matters more than the material's marketing claims.
Reflective foil for radiant heat, not primary insulation
Reflective foil products are often misunderstood. A foil surface can reflect radiant heat when it faces an air gap, which can be useful in selected locations. It does not provide the same conductive insulation performance as foam, fibre or PIR when pressed directly between metal and lining.
Use foil products as part of a planned build-up, not as a thin miracle layer. If space is very limited, a closed-cell thermal liner is usually the more practical first choice. Foil can still have a role in managing radiant heat around specific areas, but it should not be relied upon to keep a winter campervan warm on its own.
Build order matters as much as the material
Start with the shell. Repair leaks, treat corrosion and clean the panels before applying anything adhesive. Insulation can conceal a problem for months while moisture continues to damage the vehicle underneath.
Sound-deadening material comes first on the centre areas of large, resonant panels. It reduces vibration and road noise but is not thermal insulation. Applying it everywhere adds weight without improving the result proportionally. A few correctly placed sheets on roof, side and door panels are more useful than covering every square inch.
Then apply closed-cell foam to accessible metal, followed by cavity insulation in deeper areas. Run cables and any required ducting with future access in mind before fitting the final wall and ceiling linings. Finally, seal joins and service penetrations as carefully as practical, while avoiding blocked factory drains or ventilation routes.
Do not forget the floor, cab and glazing
The floor is often overlooked because it is hidden, yet it can make a noticeable difference to comfort. A combination of thin closed-cell foam or rigid board, a sound structural deck and a hard-wearing finished floor is common. Measure the total height before committing, especially where a low roof or existing furniture layout limits headroom.
The cab is another major source of heat loss. Thermal cab screens and window coverings can transform overnight comfort because glass loses heat far faster than an insulated wall. They also help reduce morning condensation on the windscreen and front doors.
Side and rear windows need similar consideration. If you are fitting new windows, plan insulation and lining depth around their frames. A well-insulated panel beside a large uninsulated window will still feel cold, so removable insulated blinds are a worthwhile part of the finished setup.
Choosing quantities without wasting material
Measure the actual panel areas, then allow for overlaps, offcuts and the awkward geometry around wheel arches, door apertures and roof ribs. Buying purely by van model can be misleading because window layouts, factory trims and interior designs vary.
Prioritise roof, large side panels, rear doors and the floor. These are the areas where coverage and thickness normally make the clearest difference. In shallow cavities, choose a thin thermal break rather than forcing in a thicker product that prevents trim panels from sitting correctly.
A good insulation build should leave you with a van that is easier to warm, slower to cool and less prone to dripping windows on a cold morning. Choose materials for their proper role, fit them cleanly and keep ventilation working - that is what turns an empty steel shell into a practical camper.
