A good van layout is not decided by a mood board. It is decided by where you put wet coats, how you reach the bed after a late ferry, whether the fridge opens with the door shut, and how much usable headroom remains once the floor and ceiling are fitted. Custom campervan interior design works best when every decision is tied to the way the van will actually be used.
For a weekend surf van, a compact galley and space for boards may take priority. For extended touring, insulation, water capacity, fixed storage and a proper sleeping arrangement usually matter more. The right answer depends on the vehicle, the number of travellers and the compromises you are prepared to make.
Start with the vehicle and the job it needs to do
Before choosing a pod, a worktop finish or a bed system, measure the van properly. Record the internal length, width at floor and waist height, wheel-arch position, door openings, roof ribs and any factory trim that must remain. On many panel vans, the walls taper towards the roof, so a unit that appears to fit on a square drawing can foul the side panel in practice.
Also confirm the payload. Furniture, insulation, windows, water, batteries, appliances and passengers all count. A large fresh-water tank and heavy timber cabinetry may suit a long-wheelbase van with capacity to spare, but can leave a smaller vehicle overloaded before luggage is added. Build weight is not an afterthought. It should shape the specification from the outset.
Write a short brief before purchasing materials or commissioning furniture. It should cover four practical points:
- How many people will sleep, travel and eat in the van
- Whether the van is for day use, weekends or longer off-grid trips
- Which items must be carried inside, such as bikes, tools, dogs or sports equipment
- The utilities required, including cooking, refrigeration, heating, water and electrical power

The visible furniture is only one part of the conversion. Road noise, condensation and cold surfaces can make even a well-made interior unpleasant to use. The correct build sequence deals with the shell first, while the panels are accessible.
Start by preparing and treating any areas of exposed metal as required. Sound-deadening material can then be applied to broad, resonant panels such as the side walls, roof and wheel tubs. Its job is to reduce panel vibration and the drumming effect associated with road noise and rain. It is not a substitute for insulation.
Thermal insulation comes next, selected for the location and available depth. Use materials suited to vehicle use and avoid packing cavities so tightly that panels bow or wiring is crushed. Consider condensation management as part of the same job. Warm interior air meeting cold van steel creates moisture, particularly around windows, doors and uninsulated ribs. A planned insulation system, sensible ventilation and carefully sealed linings are more useful than trying to cure damp later with decorative finishes.
Run cables, water pipework and ducting before fitting wall or ceiling panels. Photograph every route and label each cable at both ends. Future fault-finding is much easier when you know where a wire runs, and service access is far better than burying every connection behind fixed furniture.
Get the layout working on paper, then in the van
A scaled drawing is essential, but a full-size mock-up is even better. Mark the footprint of units on the floor with tape, or make simple templates from cardboard. Open the rear and sliding doors, sit where the seats will be, and walk through the centre aisle. You will quickly find whether a cupboard corner catches your knee or whether the bed conversion blocks access to the kitchen.
The galley is often the main layout anchor. A sink and hob need suitable worktop space, access to water and gas arrangements, ventilation, and room for pans and food. The fridge should be positioned where its door can open fully and where ventilation requirements can be met. Avoid placing it where a bed board, swivel seat or sliding door will obstruct it.
Storage should be assigned by item, rather than added wherever a gap remains. Cooking equipment needs to sit near the galley. Bedding needs dry, accessible space. Levelling ramps, hook-up leads and recovery gear are better near a rear door than underneath a mattress. Deep cupboards can waste space if there is no way to reach the back, so drawers, removable boxes and access hatches can be more practical than a single large void.
A fixed bed offers speed and comfort, but consumes a significant portion of the floor plan. A rock-and-roll bed or convertible dinette creates daytime space, but requires regular set-up and limits what can be stored on the bed. Neither approach is automatically better. It depends on whether you value a clear living area or being able to stop, park and sleep without rearranging the van.
Choose materials for use, not just appearance
Campervan furniture must cope with vibration, temperature changes and regular loading. Lightweight furniture board can keep mass down, while stronger plywood may be better for structural sections, bed boards and areas taking repeated stress. Edge treatment matters as much as the face finish. Raw or poorly protected edges can absorb moisture and deteriorate quickly around doors, sinks and wet outdoor gear.
Worktops need a durable surface and secure fixing. Hinges, catches and drawer runners should be rated for vehicle use where possible, with positive latches that remain shut on uneven roads. A domestic cabinet catch may look adequate on the drive but can open after a few miles on a rough lane.
Colour also has a practical effect. Lighter finishes make a compact van feel less enclosed, while darker furniture can hide scuffs and work well when balanced with sufficient lighting. Avoid choosing every finish separately. Take samples into the van and check them in daylight, not only under workshop lighting.
Plan services around maintenance access
Electrical, gas and water systems are not features to squeeze in once the cabinetry is complete. Their components need ventilation, protection and access for inspection. Allow a route for cables, suitable locations for fuses and isolation, and a way to reach pumps, filters, drain points and battery connections without dismantling half the interior.
For electrical design, calculate likely consumption rather than selecting a battery by guesswork. Fridge use, lighting, charging, water pumping, heating fans and occasional high-load devices all affect the system size. A van used on campsites with electric hook-up has different requirements from one expected to stay away from mains power for several days.
Water systems need similar thought. A small container is simple and easy to remove, but may be insufficient for cooking, washing and several nights away. Larger tanks improve independence but add weight and take up valuable space. Put drain valves and service points where they can be reached in cold weather, and keep pipework protected from abrasion and frost risk.
Gas appliances and installations require particular care. Use suitable components, follow manufacturer instructions and use a competent person where the work falls outside your experience. Safe installation and ventilation are not areas for improvisation.
When bespoke furniture is the sensible choice
Off-the-shelf units are useful where speed, budget and a standard layout are the priority. They can provide a reliable starting point for a straightforward conversion. Bespoke interiors become more worthwhile when the van has an unusual layout, specialist equipment, difficult wheel-arch positions or a specific storage requirement that standard units cannot accommodate.
A made-to-order interior can use awkward areas properly, align furniture with existing windows and doors, and create a consistent fit across the galley, bed and storage. It also allows the design to account for the products installed earlier in the build, rather than forcing insulation, wiring and appliances around a generic cabinet size. The best custom campervan interior design leaves room for ownership. Fasten furniture securely to appropriate vehicle structure, protect cables where they pass through panels, and avoid permanently sealing service items behind finished boards. A tidy interior is satisfying, but a usable one is better. If the door can open, the bed can be made, the cooker can be used safely and the essential kit is easy to reach, the design is doing its job.
