An empty van is not a blank canvas for long. The most reliable builds follow the construction sequence of the vehicle. It is less glamorous than choosing cabinet finishes, but it is where a usable campervan is made.

Start with a measured build plan

Before ordering materials, measure the actual vehicle rather than relying solely on a generic model drawing. Wheel arches, factory ribs, sliding-door mechanisms and trim variations all affect usable dimensions. Mark where you need to sit, sleep, cook and store equipment. Then identify where heavier items such as batteries, water tanks, fridges and furniture will sit.

Reduce panel vibration and road noise first

Bare van panels act like drums. Sound deadening and thermal insulation do different jobs. One controls vibration; the other slows heat transfer. Both improve comfort, but neither is a substitute for the other.

Insulate for the conditions you will use

A well-insulated van warms up faster, stays warmer for longer and is more comfortable during cool nights. It can also reduce heat gain in summer, although a parked van in direct sun will still need ventilation and shade.

Choose insulation that suits the location. Flexible thermal materials work well in cavities and curved sections, while more rigid boards may suit flat floor areas where compressive strength matters. Avoid filling every void blindly. Doors, pillars and cavities can contain wiring, operating mechanisms and designed drainage routes.

Condensation control is part of the same decision. Warm air from cooking, drying clothes and sleeping meets cold steel and turns into moisture. Good insulation helps, but ventilation is still essential. A roof vent, opening window or another planned airflow route will do more for day-to-day moisture management than simply adding extra layers behind the lining.

Fit windows and vents before lining

Windows should be planned before insulation, wall panels and furniture are installed. Consider sight lines from the bed and seating area, the opening direction, privacy, ventilation and whether the chosen position conflicts with internal units. On a panel van, cut-outs need careful marking and protection of exposed metal edges before the window is bonded or clamped into place.

Opening windows offer useful cross-ventilation, particularly when paired with a roof vent. Fixed windows can make a compact interior feel less enclosed and may be the better choice where security, layout or budget matters more than airflow. There is no universal answer, but ventilation should not be treated as an optional finishing detail.

Plan services before fitting furniture

Electrical cable routes, water pipes, gas arrangements where applicable, heating ducting and charging equipment need a route before cabinets and bed bases go in. Draw the layout from the battery and fuse distribution point to every planned load. Include lighting, fridge, water pump, USB or 12V outlets, roof vent and any diesel heater controls.

Keep cables protected where they pass through metal and avoid inaccessible joins behind fixed furniture. Use cable sizes and fusing appropriate to the load and route length. If you are not confident with a 12V or mains installation, involve a qualified installer. A neat interior is not worth compromised electrical safety.

Water planning is similarly practical. Decide whether a removable container is sufficient or whether an onboard fresh-water tank suits the build. Think about filling access, cleaning, frost risk, waste-water collection and where the pump will be mounted. A simple system that can be drained and serviced easily is often more useful than a complex one hidden behind cabinetry.

Choose appliances around real usage

Kitchen equipment should fit the available worktop, power system and ventilation plan. A sink and hob combination can save valuable space in a compact van, while separate units may give more flexibility in a larger layout. Check the cut-out dimensions, lid clearance and hose or pipe connections before committing to the worktop design.

Fridge/freezers need the same practical approach. Compressor units are efficient and convenient for many campervan installations, but they require adequate electrical capacity. Their size should be based on how you shop and travel, not simply on the biggest unit that physically fits. A larger fridge uses more space, weighs more and may demand a more substantial battery and charging setup.

Allow for ventilation around appliances where the manufacturer requires it. Do not bury a fridge, cooker connection or isolation point behind a permanently fixed panel. Everyday access to controls, cleaning and servicing matters more than a perfectly uninterrupted cabinet face.

Build the interior around access and durability

Furniture is where a van begins to feel like a camper, but it also determines how easy the vehicle is to live with and maintain. Test key dimensions before ordering or building: bed length, seat height, cupboard-door swing, headroom and the clearance needed to use the sliding door. Cardboard templates or taped floor outlines are worthwhile when space is tight.
