How to Stop Campervan Condensation Properly

A wet windscreen in the morning is one thing. Water running from the roof ribs, damp bedding and a musty smell inside lockers are another. Learning how to stop campervan condensation starts with accepting that a van is a small metal box: people breathe, cook and dry clothing inside it, while cold body panels sit directly behind the lining. The aim is not to remove every trace of moisture. It is to stop that moisture settling on cold surfaces and lingering long enough to cause mould, corrosion or damaged furniture.
Why campervan condensation happens
Condensation forms when warm, moisture-laden air meets a surface cold enough to bring it below its dew point. In a campervan, the usual cold surfaces are the windscreen, cab doors, uninsulated roof sections, window frames and any exposed metalwork behind furniture.
Two adults can put a surprising amount of water vapour into a van overnight simply by breathing. Add a kettle, a pan of pasta, wet coats, muddy boots or a diesel heater that is not correctly vented, and humidity rises quickly. During a cold UK night, that humid air will find the coldest panel available.
This is why wiping windows in the morning is only a temporary fix. It removes visible water, but it does not address the moisture source, the cold bridge, or the lack of air exchange that allowed it to build up.
How to stop campervan condensation: use all three controls
The reliable approach combines ventilation, insulation and moisture management. Fitting only one of them usually gives limited results. A well-insulated van with no fresh-air route can still be damp. A roof vent cannot compensate for bare steel panels. A heater can make the air feel comfortable while masking high humidity.
Ventilate continuously, not just when cooking
A roof vent is the most effective place to start because warm, humid air rises. Ideally, use one that can remain open securely in light rain and while parked overnight. Leave it cracked open when sleeping, then create a low-level inlet by opening a cab window slightly or using a vented window. This gives moisture a route out rather than allowing it to collect at roof level.
Cross-ventilation matters. If air can enter and leave at different heights, it moves through the living space rather than simply circulating around one opening. In colder weather, this may feel counterintuitive, but a small controlled airflow is usually more comfortable than waking up in a damp van.
When cooking, open the roof vent before lighting the hob. Keep pan lids on where practical and avoid long periods of boiling. If the layout allows, open a side door or window for a few minutes afterwards to purge the humid air. Never rely on a recirculating cooker hood alone, as it may remove grease but will not send moisture outside.
Insulate the metal shell properly
Insulation raises the temperature of the interior face of the van body. Warmer surfaces are less likely to reach the dew point, so less water forms behind wall boards, under the bed, or around the roof frame.
For most conversions, closed-cell insulation is a sensible choice against metal panels because it does not readily absorb water. It should be fitted tightly and consistently across large flat panels, roof sections and cavities where access permits. Follow it with insulation suitable for irregular voids and finishing layers, but avoid packing every cavity tightly with absorbent material. Trapped moisture needs a route to dry, and compressed insulation performs poorly.
The workmanship is as significant as the material. Gaps around ribs, exposed roof sections and loosely fitted panels create cold spots. These cold bridges can still attract condensation even where the rest of the van is insulated. Pay particular attention to the roof, sliding-door area, rear doors and cab bulkhead, as these are common weak points.
Sound-deadening sheets can reduce panel resonance and road noise, but they are not a substitute for thermal insulation. Fit acoustic treatment where it is needed, then build the thermal layer as a separate part of the conversion sequence. Treat windows and the cab as vulnerable areas
Glass is normally the coldest interior surface in a campervan. Thermal blinds or insulated screen covers make a noticeable difference overnight, especially on the windscreen and front cab doors. External screens generally perform best because they keep the glass colder on the outside and reduce the cold surface facing the cabin.
For side and rear windows, fitted thermal curtains or insulated blinds reduce heat loss and limit condensation. Do not seal them so tightly that no air reaches the glass at all. A little airflow helps prevent moisture becoming trapped between the blind and the window.
If the cab is separate from the living area, use a thermal curtain behind the front seats. This reduces the volume you need to heat and prevents the large expanse of cold cab glass from affecting the rear of the van. It is a practical solution for winter trips, although it will not replace exterior cab insulation on very cold nights.
Control the moisture you bring inside
Ventilation and insulation work better when you reduce moisture at source. This is often where everyday habits make the greatest difference.
Do not dry washed clothing inside the van unless there is no alternative. If you must, run the roof vent and provide a window opening at the same time. Shake rain from jackets before bringing them in, store wet boots in a tray near the entrance, and move damp towels outside during the day where possible.
A portable dehumidifier is useful when the van has access to mains electric hook-up, particularly after a wet weekend or while the vehicle is stored. It is less practical for off-grid use because it consumes power and needs a reasonably closed space to work effectively. Disposable moisture traps can help in small cupboards, but they will not solve whole-van condensation and should not be treated as a substitute for ventilation.
Check hidden areas regularly. Lift mattress sections, open seat bases and inspect under-bed garages, especially after winter use. Mattresses placed directly on solid boards can trap moisture underneath, so use a slatted base, ventilation mat or deliberate air gap. The same principle applies to cushions against exterior walls and storage boxes fitted tightly against bare steel.
Heat the van without adding water vapour
A properly installed, externally vented diesel or petrol air heater provides dry heat. It warms the interior and helps lower relative humidity, making it one of the most effective tools for cold-weather camping. Run it at a steady, sensible temperature rather than cycling the van from very cold to very hot, then switch it off without ventilation.
Avoid using unflued gas heaters, camping stoves or the vehicle engine as a heating solution. Burning fuel produces water vapour as well as potential carbon monoxide risks. A cooker should be used for cooking, not space heating. Fit suitable carbon monoxide and smoke alarms, and follow appliance installation guidance for ventilation and clearances.
Electric fan heaters can work on hook-up, but they do not remove moisture by themselves. Use one alongside an open roof vent or a controlled window opening. If you notice the windows steaming while the heater is running, the van needs more air exchange.
Build details that prevent hidden damp
Condensation damage is often concealed long before it appears on a window. During a conversion, leave access to service voids where possible and avoid sealing untreated timber directly against the van body. Use properly sealed and finished plywood for furniture, especially around kitchen units, doors and areas exposed to wet outdoor gear.
Ensure window installations, roof vents and cable entries are watertight. A leak is not condensation, but both can produce the same damp lining and mouldy smell. If water appears in one localised area after rain, inspect seals first. If it forms across multiple cold surfaces after sleeping or cooking, humidity control is the likely issue.
Also check that fridge vents, gas locker arrangements and appliance flues are installed for the equipment fitted. These systems have different requirements, and blocking or altering them to make the van feel warmer can create safety problems as well as moisture issues.
A simple overnight routine
Before bed, clear wet coats and towels from the living space, close off the cab with a thermal curtain if fitted, and put the roof vent on its secure night setting. Leave a small low-level inlet open, use insulated screens in cold weather, and keep bedding away from exterior walls where possible.
In the morning, open the van fully for a few minutes before making breakfast. Wipe any remaining water from glass and check beneath the mattress if conditions have been particularly cold or wet. This routine is not glamorous, but it prevents a single damp night becoming a recurring problem.
