Planning a Custom Interior Project for Your Van

An empty panel van makes every decision look simple until the first sheet of ply, water container or fridge takes up space. A custom interior project turns that empty volume into a usable camper, but only when the layout follows how the van will actually be used. Weekend trips for two need different priorities from a long-term touring build, a work van with occasional overnight use, or a family vehicle carrying bikes and wet kit.

The right starting point is not the finish colour or the style of cabinet doors. It is the practical order of the build: noise control, insulation, ventilation, windows, services, furniture and appliances. Get that sequence right and the finished interior is easier to install, maintain and live with.

Start the custom interior project with the use case

Before choosing furniture, define the vehicle's working brief. Consider how many people will travel and sleep in it, where it will be used, how often it will be off-grid, and what equipment must remain accessible every day. A van used mainly on campsite hook-up can rely on a simpler electrical system than one intended for regular wild camping. A surfer may need a protected area for damp boards and wetsuits, while a cyclist may accept a smaller kitchen in exchange for secure internal bike storage.

Measure the van properly, including door openings, wheel boxes, structural ribs and the position of existing factory fittings. Do not work from a generic floorplan alone. Even vans of the same model can differ around trim, glazing, seat bases and previous modifications.

Payload also needs to be part of the brief from the beginning. Furniture, water, batteries, appliances and passengers all count. A large water tank and heavy timber worktop may be worthwhile for extended stays, but they can quickly reduce the remaining allowance for people and kit. A lighter furniture board, smaller water capacity or a more compact fridge can be the sensible trade-off.

Build the shell before fitting furniture

Furniture is the visible part of a conversion, but it is not the first job. Once cabinets are in place, access to bare metal and hidden voids becomes restricted. Treating the shell properly first avoids having to remove finished work later.

Control road noise and panel resonance

Sound-deadening material is applied strategically to large, resonant metal panels such as the roof, side panels, sliding door and wheel arches. The aim is to reduce vibration and drumming, not to cover every square centimetre with the heaviest material available. Excess material adds weight without always delivering a meaningful improvement.

A quieter van is not just more pleasant on the motorway. It makes conversation easier, reduces fatigue on longer journeys and improves the feel of the finished space. Follow this with suitable acoustic and thermal layers where required, taking care not to block drainage points or interfere with door mechanisms.

Insulate for the conditions you expect

Thermal insulation helps slow heat loss in cold weather and reduces heat gain when the vehicle is parked in the sun. It also limits condensation when used as part of a complete approach. The material, thickness and placement depend on the available space and the vehicle construction.

There is no single insulation thickness that suits every build. A full-time camper used through winter benefits from more attention to the roof, floor and exposed metalwork than a fair-weather day van. However, insulation alone cannot solve moisture problems. Cooking, breathing and drying wet clothing create moisture, so ventilation needs to be planned alongside it.

Decide on windows and ventilation early

Windows change light levels, visibility and the sense of space, but they also affect privacy, thermal performance and wall space for furniture. Their location should be agreed before lining and cabinetry are cut. A window positioned where a tall unit needs to sit can force a compromise that was easy to avoid on paper.

Ventilation deserves the same consideration. Roof vents, opening windows and planned airflow are practical necessities in a sleeping and cooking space. If the van will carry gas equipment, use the correct installation approach and seek competent advice where required. Safety-critical work should never be improvised to save a small amount of budget.

Plan a layout around movement, not just measurements

A layout can fit within the dimensions of a van and still be awkward to use. Check the route from the cab to the rear, the clearance around the sliding door, and whether bed boards, drawers and appliance doors can open without blocking one another. Small pinch points become obvious after a few wet mornings or late-night stops.

A fixed bed gives immediate sleeping space and often creates valuable garage storage below. Its drawback is the amount of floor area it permanently takes up. A rock-and-roll bed or convertible seating arrangement frees space for daytime use, but adds daily setup and may limit under-bed storage. Neither is automatically better. The correct choice depends on whether the van is primarily a bedroom, a social space or an equipment carrier.

Kitchen placement should account for safe cooking, food preparation and access to water. A compact pod can provide a neat kitchen unit without a full run of bespoke cabinetry. A made-to-measure installation can use an unusual corner, work around a wheel arch or match a specific appliance size. The latter offers more control, but will usually require a longer design and quotation process.

Specify furniture and appliances as a working system

A good camper interior is not a collection of individual products. Each part affects the next. The fridge needs ventilation and electrical capacity. The hob and sink need sensible working space, water provision and safe clearances. Cupboards need latches that remain secure on the road. Drawers need to clear seat bases and door apertures.

For a custom campervan interior project, provide the dimensions and models of any appliances you already own. This prevents a cabinet being designed around an assumed size that is a few millimetres wrong. It is equally useful to state whether you need space for a compressor fridge, portable toilet, leisure battery, gas locker, water container or electrical control equipment.

Storage should be split by use rather than treated as one large empty cupboard. Everyday items need to be reachable without dismantling the bed. Heavy tools and recovery gear should be low down and secured. Food storage needs to be dry, and wet outdoor equipment needs a place that does not soak bedding or damage furniture edges.

Consider service access as part of the furniture design. Fuses, battery connections, water pumps, drain points and isolation valves should be reachable for checks and repairs. A removable panel is more useful than a beautifully finished box that has to be dismantled to replace a fuse.

Prepare a useful brief for a quotation

Custom work is priced properly when the builder has a clear brief. A few photographs of the empty or part-built van, accurate internal measurements, the vehicle make and wheelbase, and a simple sketch of the preferred layout will all reduce back-and-forth. Include which stages are already complete, especially windows, flooring, insulation and electrical work.

Be clear about what is fixed and what is flexible. You may be certain that the van needs a full-width fixed bed and a fridge, but open to different cupboard arrangements. That gives the designer room to solve the layout rather than copying a plan that does not suit the shell.

Budget should be discussed honestly. Bespoke furniture can reduce wasted space and produce a more integrated result, but material choice, appliance specification, finish level and fitting complexity all affect cost. A practical build may use durable, simple finishes in high-wear areas and reserve more expensive detailing for visible surfaces. Leave room for real-world changes

The first layout is rarely the final answer. During the build, you may find that a cable route needs more space, a seat base changes the cabinet position or an appliance requires additional ventilation. Allow a small contingency in both budget and timetable, particularly where several trades or specialist installations are involved.

The most successful camper interiors are not the ones with the most features. They are the ones where the bed is easy to use, the gear stays secure, the van remains comfortable in poor weather and essential systems can be maintained without stripping out half the build. Plan for those ordinary moments first, and the finished van will earn its place on every trip.
