Campervan Kitchen Units That Work on the Road

A kitchen is often the first area that makes an empty van feel usable, but campervan kitchen units need to earn every millimetre they occupy. A unit that looks tidy in a workshop can become frustrating once it blocks access to a sliding door, leaves no room for a fridge to ventilate, or adds more weight than the vehicle can sensibly carry. The right answer starts with the van, the layout and how you actually intend to cook.
For some builds, a compact side kitchen with a sink and single-burner hob is enough. For longer trips, family use or regular off-grid stops, more worktop, refrigeration and proper dry storage may justify a larger installation. The aim is not to fit a domestic kitchen into a van. It is to create a durable, safe working area that supports the rest of the conversion.
Start with the layout, not the cabinet style
Before choosing finishes, decide where the kitchen sits in relation to the bed, seating, doors and storage. Most campervan kitchen units are fitted along one side of the vehicle, usually behind the driver or passenger seat. This keeps the centre aisle clear and allows the kitchen to use the van wall for fixing points, window positions and service runs.
A rear kitchen can work well in some day vans and compact builds, particularly where cooking outside the back doors is part of the plan. It can also preserve side-door access. The trade-off is that it may interfere with bed arrangements and is less convenient in poor weather if the rear doors must be open to use it properly.
Take accurate measurements before ordering or building anything. Allow for the shape of the van wall, wheel arches, door openings, seat movement and trim panels, not just the apparent floor length. A unit can be technically narrow enough on paper but still foul a door handle or leave an awkwardly tight passage. Check the height too. Worktops commonly sit around domestic counter height, but a lower unit can be more appropriate in a low-roof van or where the seating and bed system dictate the available space.
Keep the working sequence simple
The most useful small kitchens follow a straightforward order: cold storage, preparation space, sink and cooking. It will not always be possible to include all four in a short run, but even a small section of clear worktop makes a major difference. Avoid placing the hob directly beside a tall cabinet side or fridge wall where pan handles, heat and cleaning become a problem.
Think about use with the sliding door open and closed. Many owners cook with the door open in fair weather, so a worktop that faces the opening can be useful. In winter or on a busy campsite, you still need a kitchen that can be used without relying on outside space.
Choose materials for vehicle use
Campervan furniture is subject to vibration, changing temperatures, condensation and regular knocks. Lightweight construction matters, but it should not come at the cost of weak fixings, flexing drawers or exposed board edges that swell after a spill.
Lightweight furniture board is a common choice for cabinet carcasses and doors because it is practical to machine, available in suitable finishes and straightforward to match across a full interior. Proper edge banding and sealed cut-outs are essential, especially around the sink and any area where water can sit. Plywood can be a good option where a durable exposed edge or painted finish is required, although board quality, thickness and total weight need consideration.
Worktops need particular attention. A thin, lightweight top can be perfectly adequate if it is well supported and sealed, but it must tolerate hot pans, wet utensils and repeated cleaning. Do not assume a household kitchen offcut will suit the job. Its weight, thickness and susceptibility to moisture may make it a poor fit for a vehicle.

Plan appliances and services together
A kitchen unit is only one part of the system. The sink, hob, fridge, water tanks, gas equipment, batteries and ventilation all need a route, a fixing method and access for maintenance. Decide on these components before finalising cabinet dimensions.
Sink and water storage
A small combined sink and hob unit can save valuable worktop space. It is a sensible solution for weekend vans and compact conversions, particularly if a glass lid creates an extra preparation surface when closed. Separate appliances provide more flexibility but generally demand a longer counter.
Consider where fresh and waste water will sit. Portable containers inside the cabinet are simple to remove and refill, making them suitable for smaller systems. Larger fixed tanks provide more capacity but add plumbing complexity and weight. Whichever arrangement you use, leave enough space to remove containers without dismantling the kitchen, and fit pipework so it will not chafe against sharp edges or moving furniture.
Hob, gas and ventilation
Gas cooking is efficient and familiar, but it must be installed with care. The gas locker, pipework, regulator, appliance requirements and ventilation provisions should be treated as a safety system, not an afterthought. A gas bottle cannot simply be tucked into an unused cupboard beside food and tools.
Some builders prefer portable cooking equipment to reduce fixed installation work. That can suit occasional use, but it changes how and where you cook, and it does not remove the need for sensible ventilation and safe storage. Fixed or portable, avoid cooking beneath low overhead lockers without suitable clearances and heat protection.
Refrigeration and electrical supply
A compressor fridge is usually more suitable than a domestic-style cooler for a campervan, but it needs clear ventilation around the compressor and condenser area. A fridge crammed into a tightly sealed cabinet will work harder, consume more power and may have a shorter service life.
Check the fridge dimensions with ventilation allowances included, not just the appliance body size. Plan cable routes, fuse protection and battery capacity before the unit goes in. A larger fridge can be worthwhile for extended touring, but it affects payload, available storage and electrical demand. There is no benefit in fitting more cold storage than your battery and charging system can support.
Make storage secure and accessible
The best kitchen storage is not necessarily the largest. It is the storage you can reach without emptying half the van, and that stays shut when travelling over poor roads. Drawers should have positive catches or locking mechanisms. Cupboard doors need reliable latches, and hinges should be suitable for repeated vibration.
Use the lower sections for heavier items such as pans, food tins and water containers. Keeping weight low helps vehicle stability and reduces strain on cabinet fixings. Upper lockers are better reserved for lighter cookware, mugs and dry goods. If you include open shelving, fit a retaining lip or use it only for items that will be removed before driving.
A pull-out drawer can be more practical than a deep cupboard because it exposes the full contents. However, drawers add hardware, can weigh more and need enough room to open into the aisle. In a narrow van, a simple cupboard with removable baskets may be the more sensible choice.
Fix campervan kitchen units to the vehicle properly
Furniture must be secured to suitable structural points, not merely screwed into thin trim or a plywood floor. The fixing approach depends on the van and build design, but the unit should be restrained against forward, rearward and sideways movement. Remember that a fully loaded kitchen weighs far more than an empty carcass.
Fit the kitchen after the major sound-deadening, insulation, wiring and wall-lining work is complete. This sequence makes it easier to run services, inspect connections and avoid removing finished furniture to correct an earlier-stage job. Windows should also be considered before final cabinet placement, as a window can improve light and ventilation but may limit where wall-mounted units can be fixed.
Before drilling or fastening, inspect both sides of the proposed fixing area. Check for factory wiring looms, fuel lines, structural members and external components. Protect cables and pipes with grommets or conduit where they pass through furniture panels.
Do not forget payload and daily use
Every board, appliance, tank and set of cookware contributes to vehicle weight. Weighing individual components during the build is more useful than guessing at the end. Water is particularly significant: one litre weighs roughly one kilogram, so a full fresh-water tank changes the calculation quickly.
It also helps to test the kitchen before fitting final trims. Place your usual pan on the hob, open the drawers, lift the fridge door and stand where you would while making a meal. Small changes to handle positions, shelf heights or worktop length are far easier at this stage than after the unit is fully installed.
A well-planned campervan kitchen should feel ordinary to use in the best sense: nothing rattles, nothing blocks the route through the van, and the essentials are where you expect them to be. Build around those daily details, and the kitchen will keep working long after the first trip.
