Campervan Fridge Comparison for Van Builds

A fridge that works well on a campsite hook-up can be the wrong choice for a van parked off-grid for three days. That is the point of a proper campervan fridge comparison: not finding the biggest unit or the lowest ticket price, but matching the fridge to the electrical system, kitchen layout and way the vehicle will actually be used.

For most modern conversions, a 12V compressor fridge is the practical starting point. It cools effectively while the van is moving or stationary, suits lithium-based leisure battery systems and does not rely on being level. That does not automatically make it right for every build. Smaller day vans, occasional festival vans and vehicles with an existing gas-focused setup can have different requirements.

Campervan fridge comparison: the main types

Campervan fridges generally fall into three groups: 12V compressor fridges, three-way absorption fridges and portable compressor coolers. Thermoelectric cool boxes are also sold for vehicle use, but they are a limited solution rather than a replacement for a proper installed fridge.

12V compressor fridges

A compressor fridge works much like a domestic refrigerator, using a compressor and refrigerant circuit to remove heat from the cabinet. Models are commonly designed to run on 12V or 24V DC, with some also accepting 230V mains through a built-in or separate power supply.

For a typical UK campervan conversion, this is usually the best all-round option. Compressor fridges cool quickly, maintain temperature well in warm weather and continue operating effectively when the van is parked on a slope. They are available as front-opening units, top-loading units and drawer fridges, so there is usually a format to suit the furniture layout.

The trade-off is electrical demand. A compressor does not run constantly, but it draws a meaningful current when cycling. Actual daily consumption depends on ambient temperature, fridge size, thermostat setting, ventilation and how often the door is opened. A small, well-installed 40-litre fridge may be manageable with a modest leisure battery, while a larger fridge freezer used through a hot summer weekend needs a more considered battery and charging setup.

As a working guide, a compressor fridge should be paired with a dedicated leisure battery, correctly sized cable, an appropriate fuse and reliable charging from the alternator, mains hook-up, solar, or a combination of these. It should not be treated as a simple accessory connected to the starter battery.

Three-way absorption fridges

Three-way fridges can run from 12V, 230V mains and LPG. This flexibility made them common in older motorhomes and caravans, particularly where long stays on mains hook-up or gas use were expected.

On gas or mains, an absorption fridge can be a sensible option. The complication comes on 12V. In most installations, the 12V mode is intended to maintain temperature while driving, not pull a warm fridge down to operating temperature from scratch. It can place a heavy and continuous load on the vehicle electrical system, so it is normally wired through a relay to operate only with the engine running.

They also need correct ventilation and generally perform best when the vehicle is level. In hot conditions, cooling performance can fall behind that of a compressor fridge. Gas installations introduce further design and safety requirements, including compliant pipework, a sealed external locker where required, suitable vents and professional testing. For many new self-builds, the simplicity of removing gas refrigeration from the equation is reason enough to choose a compressor model.

An absorption fridge still has a place in certain builds. If the van will spend long periods on serviced pitches, already has a properly designed LPG system and the owner wants to reduce reliance on battery capacity, it may be worth considering. It is not, however, the automatic budget alternative it can first appear to be.

Portable compressor coolers

A portable compressor cooler is a useful middle ground between a fitted fridge and a basic cool box. It runs from 12V, can often be powered from 230V mains and is easy to move between the van, awning, workshop or another vehicle.

For a day van or a vehicle that needs its load area clear during the week, portability is a genuine advantage. There is no cabinet aperture to build, and the unit can be removed when not needed. Some models can freeze as well as refrigerate, which is useful for longer trips.

The compromise is practical space. A top-opening cooler needs clear room above it, meaning it cannot sit under a fixed worktop unless the lid has a planned opening route. It also needs securing for travel. A full portable cooler is heavy, and a loose appliance can become a hazard under braking. Consider its tie-down points, cable route and the effect it has on access to other equipment before making it part of the layout.

Thermoelectric cool boxes

Thermoelectric cool boxes are inexpensive and readily available, but their performance is tied closely to the temperature outside the box. They cool below ambient temperature rather than actively refrigerating in the same way as a compressor unit. On a mild day they may keep drinks acceptably cool; on a warm day in a sun-heated van, results can be disappointing.

They can also draw power continuously. For short journeys or keeping packed food cool between home and campsite, they have a use. For storing fresh food and milk safely during a multi-day trip, they are usually the wrong tool.

Choose capacity around your actual use

Fridge capacity affects battery demand, cabinet size and cost, but larger is not always better. A 30 to 40-litre unit can work well for one or two people taking short breaks, especially if food shopping is part of the trip. A 50 to 65-litre fridge is often a practical size for a couple touring for several days. Families, longer off-grid stays and people carrying more fresh food may need 80 litres or more.

Look at usable internal layout, not the litre figure alone. A small freezer compartment can be useful for ice packs, but it takes space and can increase energy use. Bottle storage, removable shelves and a door that opens in the right direction may make a modest fridge more useful than a larger poorly arranged one.

Measure the available cabinet opening carefully. Include the fridge body, door clearance, hinges, ventilation gaps and any service access. In a compact side kitchen, a front-opening fridge can be straightforward to use. In a low bed platform or bench seat, a top-loading unit may use the space more efficiently.

Power consumption and battery planning

A campervan fridge should be considered early in the electrical design, alongside lighting, water pump, heater controls, USB charging and any inverter loads. The fridge is one of the few appliances likely to operate around the clock.

Battery capacity is measured in amp hours, but usable capacity depends on battery type. Lithium batteries can generally provide more of their rated capacity than lead-acid batteries without shortening their service life. The fridge also needs charging capacity to match. A larger battery without a suitable split-charge system, mains charger or solar input only delays the point at which power runs low.

For compressor fridges, manufacturer consumption figures are useful for comparison, but treat them as a baseline. Summer sun on the van side, a fridge installed beside a cooker, poor airflow behind the cabinet and frequent door opening will all increase real-world use. Allow margin rather than designing a system that only works in ideal conditions.

Low-voltage protection matters too. Many compressor fridges have an adjustable cut-out that stops the unit before it drains the leisure battery too far. Set it appropriately for the battery chemistry and wiring arrangement. If the fridge cuts out regularly, the answer is not simply to lower the protection setting. Check charging, battery condition, cable voltage drop and ventilation first.

Installation details that affect performance

A good fridge can perform badly if it is boxed in without ventilation. The compressor and condenser must shed heat, so follow the appliance manufacturer's clearance requirements around the rear and sides. Warm air needs a route out of the cabinet, not just a decorative grille with no airflow behind it.

Keep the fridge away from direct heat where possible. If it sits next to an oven, heater duct or uninsulated panel exposed to the sun, consider the effect on both power use and cooling. Insulation, thermal breaks and sensible furniture placement are part of making the appliance work efficiently.

Use suitably sized cable and a dedicated fused circuit. Long, undersized cable runs cause voltage drop, which can make a fridge cut out even when the battery appears adequately charged. Secure the fridge through its intended mounting points and ensure doors, drawers and shelves cannot open while travelling.

Noise is worth considering in a small van. Most modern compressor fridges are quiet, but the compressor cycle is still noticeable when sleeping close to the kitchen. A solid installation, adequate airflow and avoiding panels that can vibrate against the cabinet will reduce unwanted noise.

Which campervan fridge is the sensible choice?

For a self-contained campervan used for weekends, touring and occasional off-grid stops, a correctly installed 12V compressor fridge is normally the most dependable choice. It works with the direction most modern electrical systems are taking and avoids the additional complexity of gas refrigeration.

A portable compressor cooler makes sense where flexibility matters more than a permanent kitchen. A three-way fridge can still suit a particular motorhome-style setup, but only where gas provision, ventilation and level parking are already accepted parts of the build.

Buy the fridge after setting the kitchen dimensions and electrical plan, not before. A unit that fits the cabinet, has room to breathe and can be supported by the leisure system will do more for day-to-day comfort than a larger fridge chosen on capacity alone.
