How to Install Van Flooring in Your Camper

A van floor is not just a surface to stand on. It carries your furniture, takes the load from water tanks and fridge units, absorbs daily foot traffic, and sets the level for every panel and pod fitted above it. Knowing how to install van flooring properly means dealing with the base first, not simply laying vinyl over an uneven metal floor.
This guide covers a practical approach for a UK campervan build, from stripping out the vehicle to fitting a finished floor that is level, durable and ready for furniture installation.
Assess the van floor before buying materials
Start with the bare load area. Remove the factory floor, tie-down rings, loose trim and any old adhesive so you can inspect the metal properly. Vacuum out grit and check the floor channels, wheel arches and seams for corrosion, standing water or damage from previous fittings.
A factory plywood floor can be a useful template, but do not assume it is suitable as the finished subfloor. Many are thin, heavily cut around existing fixtures, or have absorbed moisture around the edges. If it is flat, dry and structurally sound, you may be able to reuse it as a pattern for a new board. If it is swollen, delaminating or soft around fixing holes, replace it.
Decide what the finished floor needs to support. A simple day van with removable camping equipment can use a lighter build-up than a full camper with fixed seating, kitchen units, batteries and a water system. Every layer adds weight, so avoid adding thickness without a reason. The aim is a floor that is solid and properly supported, not needlessly heavy.
Plan your van flooring build-up
Most campervan floors are made up of three parts: an insulated and levelled base, a structural plywood subfloor, and a hard-wearing visible finish such as sheet vinyl, vinyl plank, rubber or carpet. The exact order and thickness depend on the vehicle and intended use.
On a ribbed steel van floor, the main question is how you will bridge or fill the channels. Some builders fit battens across the ribs and insulate between them. Others use rigid insulation cut to fit the recesses, then lay a plywood sheet over the top. Either method can work if the floor is fully supported and the subfloor cannot flex under load.
Do not bury cables without a plan. If you need wiring for rear lights, a water pump or other equipment to run beneath the floor, place it in suitable protective conduit, keep it clear of sharp metal, and photograph the route before covering it. You will be glad of that record when adding a fixing later.
For a typical van conversion, moisture-resistant plywood is a sensible choice for the subfloor. Thickness is vehicle and layout dependent, but the board must remain stiff between supports and provide enough material for carefully planned furniture fixings. Fixed furniture should not rely on thin flooring alone. Where possible, use vehicle structural points, approved brackets or properly designed fixing methods.
Prepare the metalwork and insulation
Clean the exposed steel with a suitable degreaser and allow it to dry fully. Treat any corrosion before it disappears under insulation and boards. A floor installed over damp metal can trap moisture and turn a small issue into an unpleasant repair job.
Sound-deadening material can be applied to selected large, flat metal sections to reduce panel resonance, but it is not an insulation layer and does not need to cover every square inch. Thermal insulation is the layer that helps reduce heat loss through the floor. Closed-cell materials are usually better suited to this area than products that can hold water.
Keep the build-up tidy around factory drain points and service access where relevant. You should not block a drain or make future maintenance impossible just to gain a few millimetres of insulation. In a van used through a British winter, preventing damp and condensation is as useful as adding extra thickness.
Make an accurate template for the subfloor
Templates save expensive plywood and prevent the familiar problem of trying to force a nearly correct floor into a tapered van body. Cardboard, hardboard or several pieces of thin board taped together can all work. Cardboard is quick, but rigid hardboard often gives a more reliable result on larger floors.
Lay the template material in the van and work from the centre outwards. Mark wheel arches, side doors, rear thresholds, seat bases, factory mounting points and any areas that must remain accessible. Use a small spacer block or a pencil held against a timber offcut to scribe the contour of the bodywork rather than trying to guess the curve.
Check the template in the van several times. It should sit flat without being forced beneath trim or hard against the side walls. Leave a modest expansion gap around the perimeter, particularly if using plywood. The van body moves and temperatures change, so a board wedged tightly against steel can creak or lift.
Once you are satisfied, transfer the pattern to the plywood. Mark the front, rear and visible face clearly before cutting. It is remarkably easy to turn a template over and cut a reversed floor.
Cut, seal and test-fit the plywood
Support the board fully on trestles or a workbench and cut with a circular saw or jigsaw as appropriate. A fine blade gives a cleaner edge for the visible floor finish, while a jigsaw is useful around wheel arches and awkward curves. Cut slightly outside the line at first if you are unsure, then trim gradually for a close fit.
Dry-fit the plywood before applying adhesive or fitting a finished surface. Check that it lies flat across the entire floor and does not rock over battens, insulation joins or protruding fixings. If it moves, find the high point and correct the base rather than trying to pull the board down with screws.
Seal all plywood edges, cut-outs and fixing holes before installation. The edges are where boards most often take on moisture from wet boots, condensation, leaks or cleaning. A properly sealed board will last longer and helps prevent the finished floor from lifting at the perimeter.
Fix the subfloor without creating problems
Your fixing method depends on the van and the floor construction. Existing factory fixing points are often the preferred starting point, especially where a factory board was already secured. Use suitable bolts, washers and inserts where required, and avoid drilling blindly into the vehicle floor. Fuel lines, brake lines, wiring looms and components beneath the body are not always where you expect them to be.
Avoid excessive fixings. The subfloor needs to be secure, but a grid of unnecessary holes creates more routes for water and corrosion. If you drill new holes, treat bare metal and seal the fixing correctly. Check underneath the vehicle before drilling, every time.
Do not use the floor as the sole restraint for major items. A kitchen unit, seat system or heavy battery installation must be secured for the forces involved in braking and an accident, not just stopped from sliding around on the ply. Plan these anchor points before laying the final surface.
Fit the finished van flooring
Sheet vinyl is a practical choice for many campervans because it is easy to clean, handles muddy footwear well and gives a continuous surface with few dirt traps. Vinyl plank can look smart and allows local replacement, but it needs a very flat base and may move if fitted too tightly in a vehicle subject to temperature changes. Rubber flooring is hard-wearing for utility-focused builds, while carpet is better reserved for areas where warmth and softness matter more than easy cleaning.
Bring the chosen material into the van or workshop and allow it to acclimatise before cutting. Use the plywood floor as a template where possible, leaving enough material to trim accurately at doors and thresholds. For sheet vinyl, cut oversize, position it carefully, then trim in stages using a sharp knife and straightedge.
Whether to bond the finish fully depends on the material and its manufacturer guidance. A fully bonded floor is less likely to creep, but makes later removal harder. A loose-laid finish held beneath furniture and edge trims can be easier to replace, provided it cannot shift in normal use. At sliding and rear doors, use suitable threshold trims to protect exposed edges and prevent a trip hazard.
Common mistakes when installing van flooring
The most common issue is fitting a decorative finish over an uneven base. It may look acceptable on day one, but ridges, voids and board joints soon show through vinyl and create wear points. Take time to level the structure beneath it.
Another mistake is fitting furniture before the floor layout is final. You then end up cutting flooring around cabinets, with exposed edges where spills and dirt can get in. In most builds, fitting the finished floor before cabinetry produces a cleaner result, although some heavy structural furniture may need its mountings planned first.
Finally, do not overlook finished floor height. A thicker floor affects door thresholds, swivel seats, step heights, trim panels and the clearance beneath appliances. Measure the complete build-up before ordering materials, especially in compact vans where a few millimetres can matter.
A well-fitted van floor should disappear into the build once it is done. It should feel firm underfoot, stay quiet on the road and give you a sound base for everything that follows. Get that foundation right, and the insulation, furniture and finishing work above it become far easier to install accurately.
