How to Fit a Campervan Sink Correctly First Time

A sink is one of the small jobs that can cause big problems later if it is fitted without a plan. A poor cut-out weakens the worktop, an inaccessible waste connection will eventually leak, and a badly positioned tap can foul a window, bed board or overhead locker. Knowing how to fit a campervan sink properly means planning the complete water system before cutting into your finished furniture.

The best installation is not necessarily the one with the largest bowl or the smartest-looking tap. It is the one that suits the available space, leaves room for plumbing and storage, and can be serviced without dismantling half the van.

Plan the sink position before cutting

Start with the unit below the worktop, not the worktop itself. Check where the fresh-water tank, waste tank, pump, pipework and any cooker or fridge will sit. A sink may look central from above but leave no clearance for the waste fitting underneath.

Measure the sink body, not just its outer rim. Most inset campervan sinks have a flange that overlaps the worktop and a smaller body that drops through the cut-out. The manufacturer’s cut-out template is the best guide where supplied, but check it against the actual sink before use. Templates can be generic, and a few millimetres matter when fitting into a compact pod or narrow kitchen unit.

Allow enough space behind the sink for the tap body and hose tails. If the tap folds down beneath a window, test the clearance with the window shut and with any blind or trim in place. Also check clearance at the front: the bowl should not sit so close to a cupboard edge that the worktop becomes weak or the doors below cannot open properly.

Think about service access at this stage. You should be able to reach the waste trap, hose clips, pump connections and drain valve from inside a cupboard or through a removable panel. Hiding every pipe can make the finished van look tidy, but inaccessible plumbing turns a simple repair into a major job.

Choose a sink and tap that suit the build

Stainless steel is hard-wearing, easy to clean and works well in most campervan kitchens. A combined sink and hob can save valuable worktop space, although it concentrates water, gas and waste services in one area. Separate units give more flexibility and can make maintenance easier.

The bowl depth is a practical compromise. A deeper sink holds washing-up better but takes more room below the counter. A shallow bowl preserves cupboard space, but may be less useful if the van is regularly used by more than one person. Check that the waste outlet and pipe can run downhill without clashing with drawers, wheel arches or water containers.

For the tap, a microswitch tap is commonly used with a 12V submersible pump. Opening the tap activates the pump through the electrical switch built into the tap. A pressure-switch pump uses a standard tap and maintains pressure in the system. Either arrangement works, but the plumbing, wiring and available space should be decided before installation.

Tools and materials for fitting a campervan sink

Have the parts on hand before you start. Stopping mid-installation because a waste fitting is the wrong diameter is avoidable. For a typical inset sink installation, you will need:

  • the sink, tap, waste outlet and any supplied clips or fixings
  • a tape measure, pencil, straight edge and masking tape
  • a drill and suitable bit for starter holes
  • a jigsaw with a blade suited to your worktop material
  • sealant appropriate for kitchens and vehicle use
  • fresh-water hose, waste hose, hose clips and pipe inserts where required
  • a water pump, tanks and electrical components suited to the chosen system
If your furniture uses lightweight ply, laminated board or a composite panel, test the jigsaw blade on an offcut first. A coarse blade can chip a finished laminate edge badly.

How to fit a campervan sink into the worktop

Place the sink upside down on the worktop in its final position. Mark around the outer edge, then use the manufacturer’s dimensions or template to mark the actual cut-out line inside that outline. Do not cut to the outer edge of the sink. The flange needs a consistent lip of worktop to sit on.

Apply masking tape over the cut line. This makes pencil marks clearer and helps reduce chipping on laminated surfaces. Drill a starter hole just inside each corner, large enough for the jigsaw blade. If the sink has square corners, drill near each corner and cut slowly between them. Rounded corners are better finished by following the marked curve rather than forcing a sharp turn with the blade.

Support the centre section before completing the final cut. If it drops, it can tear the laminate or pull fibres from the underside of the board. Lift the cut-out away, then lower the sink into place without sealant to confirm the fit. It should sit flat with an even overlap all around. Trim carefully if required; removing too much material cannot be reversed.

Seal every exposed edge of the cut-out, particularly on plywood, MDF or chipboard-based worktops. The sink flange may prevent spills reaching the edge from above, but condensation, minor leaks and cleaning water can still enter from underneath. Two thin coats of suitable sealant or edge treatment are better than leaving raw timber exposed.

Fit the waste before fixing the sink down

It is usually easier to install the waste outlet and trap while the sink is out of the worktop. Fit the supplied rubber seals in the correct order and hand-tighten the waste fitting first. Over-tightening plastic threads can distort seals or crack the fitting.

Run the waste hose from the sink outlet to the grey-water container or fixed waste tank. Keep the route as short and direct as the furniture layout allows. It should fall downhill where possible, with no sharp kinks and no low loops that hold stagnant water. A flexible hose is useful in a moving vehicle, but it still needs support so it cannot rub through against a cabinet edge or metalwork.

Secure every hose connection with a suitable clip. Test that the waste container can be removed or drained without disconnecting the entire system. Do not drain sink water onto the road or into a car park. A proper grey-water tank or removable container keeps the van cleaner and avoids an unnecessary mess at stopovers.

Connect the fresh-water supply

The fresh-water route is normally from the tank to the pump, then from the pump to the tap. Position the tank so it is secure, accessible for cleaning and protected from sharp edges. A full water container is much heavier than it looks, so it must be restrained properly rather than left loose in a cupboard.

Use hose designed for potable water and make clean, square cuts. Push the hose fully onto barbed fittings and use clips where the fitting type requires them. Avoid routing water pipe next to hot ducting, sharp metal edges or unprotected electrical cables.

For a microswitch tap, wire the pump through a correctly rated fused circuit. Isolate the leisure battery before making connections, and protect cable where it passes through furniture or metal. If electrical work is outside your experience, have that part checked by a competent installer. Water and 12V systems are straightforward when installed correctly, but poor connections lead to unreliable pumps and difficult fault-finding.

Seal and secure the sink

Once the waste and tap are fitted, apply a continuous bead of sealant under the sink flange. Use enough to fill minor gaps in the worktop, but do not apply so much that it spreads heavily into the bowl or cupboard below. Lower the sink carefully into the opening and fit the retaining clips or fixings supplied with it.

Tighten clips gradually in an alternating pattern. This pulls the sink down evenly and avoids bending a thin stainless-steel flange. Wipe away excess sealant straight away with a suitable cleaner and leave it to cure for the stated time before exposing it to regular use.

A sink should feel firm when pressed at each corner. If it moves, investigate before continuing. Movement eventually breaks the seal and puts strain on the waste fitting below.

Test the system before finishing the unit

Fill the fresh-water tank with a small amount of water and run the tap. Check each fresh-water connection, the tap body, the waste fitting and the full length of the drain hose. Then fill the bowl and remove the plug to test the waste under a higher flow rate.

Use dry kitchen roll around fittings rather than relying on a quick visual inspection. It will show even a small seep. Check again after the pump has cycled several times, and after moving the van if possible. Vibration is part of campervan use, so a connection that is only just tight enough on the driveway may not remain so on the road.

Leave a removable access panel where the plumbing sits, even in a neat bespoke interior. A well-fitted campervan sink should disappear into the kitchen when you are using the van, but its pumps, hoses and connections should never be difficult to reach when they need attention.
