An empty panel van can look like a cheap starting point until the first order goes in. A realistic campervan conversion cost breakdown needs to account for the build in the order it is completed: preparation, insulation, windows, electrics, furniture, appliances and the small fittings that are easy to overlook. For a UK DIY build, the difference between a basic weekend van and a properly equipped touring camper can be many thousands of pounds.

The figures below are working ranges rather than fixed quotes. Van size, intended use, component quality and how much labour you do yourself will decide where your build lands. They are also separate from the purchase price of the base vehicle unless stated otherwise.

Start with the base vehicle and build scope

A usable donor van is usually the largest single cost. Older, high-mileage vans may appear inexpensive but can need tyres, servicing, brakes, body repairs, timing belt work or welding before conversion materials are even considered. A newer van costs more upfront but may reduce mechanical uncertainty and make a higher-spec conversion easier to justify.

For the conversion itself, set the scope before buying materials. A day van with removable cooking equipment, a leisure battery and basic lining may be achievable for around £3,000 to £6,000 in materials, excluding the vehicle. A self-contained camper with fixed furniture, windows, diesel heating, water, refrigeration and a capable electrical system commonly sits around £8,000 to £20,000 for a DIY materials-led build. Bespoke furniture, premium appliances and paid installation can take it well beyond that.

Do not set a budget by copying somebody else's finished van. A short-wheelbase van used for occasional weekends needs a different system from a long-wheelbase vehicle intended for year-round touring or remote working.

Sound deadening and thermal insulation: £300 to £1,200

This is the stage that determines whether the van feels refined or like a bare cargo vehicle. Sound-deadening sheets applied to large vibrating panels can reduce panel resonance and road noise. Thermal insulation then slows heat loss in colder weather and helps limit solar gain in summer.

Material cost depends on coverage, thickness and the number of surfaces treated. A modest application to key wall, floor and door panels costs less than lining the whole shell thoroughly. Allow for foil tape, panel wipes, adhesives, rollers and suitable vapour-management materials where required. The temptation is to save money here because the finished surfaces hide the work, but access disappears once furniture and lining are fitted.

Windows, vents and exterior work: £500 to £2,500

Fitting side windows changes both the appearance and usability of a van, particularly where fixed furniture blocks existing rear visibility. Costs vary sharply between a single bonded window and multiple opening windows, privacy glass, sliding-door glass and professional installation.

Ventilation should be budgeted at the same time. A roof vent, fan or opening window helps manage condensation, cooking vapour and summer heat. Cutting apertures is permanent work, so this is not an area for rushed measurements or unsuitable sealants. If you are not confident cutting bodywork, labour can be money well spent.

Lining, flooring and wall finishes: £500 to £2,000

A proper floor normally starts with a stable subfloor, insulation where appropriate and a durable finished surface. Wall and ceiling costs include battens or framework, ply lining, carpet lining or decorative boards, fixings, adhesives and trims.

The budget rises when the finish must withstand dogs, wet kit, regular use or commercial hire. Lightweight materials may cost more but can help protect payload. Heavy timber, thick boards and overbuilt cabinetry all add up before the van is loaded with water, passengers and camping equipment.

Electrical system and lighting: £800 to £4,000

A basic leisure electrical setup may include a leisure battery, split-charge arrangement, fuse box, wiring, sockets and LED lights. A more independent system adds a battery-to-battery charger, mains hook-up, solar charging, inverter, battery monitor and larger lithium battery bank.

The right spend depends on demand. If the van only needs lights, USB charging and a water pump, a large inverter and extensive solar array may be unnecessary. If it will run a compressor fridge, laptop, heater controls and off-grid charging for several days, undersizing the electrical system creates a poor result and usually costs more to correct later.

Allow separately for cable, lugs, conduit, glands, fuses, isolators, consumer units and installation hardware. These smaller parts are essential, not optional extras. Electrical work must be correctly protected, routed and tested. Where mains hook-up or complex charging equipment is involved, professional installation or inspection is sensible.

Heating, water and gas: £700 to £3,500

A diesel air heater is one of the most useful upgrades for shoulder-season and winter use, but the installed cost includes ducting, fuel supply, exhaust routing, mounting hardware and controls as well as the heater itself. Cheap installations can become noisy, inefficient or unsafe if clearances and exhaust routing are ignored.

A simple water setup with portable containers, a pump and tap may cost a few hundred pounds. Fixed fresh and waste tanks, an external fill point, water level indication and hot-water provision raise both material and labour costs. Think about frost protection, access for cleaning and where waste water will sit when the van is fully loaded.

For gas, budget for the locker, regulator, pipework, appliances and safe ventilation, not simply the cylinder. Gas systems require careful design and competent installation. Some builders choose diesel heating and electric cooking to simplify the setup, but that shifts demand back to the electrical system.

Kitchen appliances: £600 to £2,500

A compact kitchen usually includes a sink, tap, hob, worktop and storage. Adding a compressor fridge/freezer, oven, grill or premium combined hob-and-sink unit increases cost quickly. The fridge is often the appliance worth prioritising because it affects electrical design, ventilation and everyday practicality.

Measure appliances against the actual cabinet layout before ordering. A low-price unit that does not fit the available depth, needs extra ventilation space or clashes with a wheel arch can cause expensive changes later. Also include pipework, drainage fittings, gas fittings where applicable and appliance vents in the allowance.

Furniture, bed and storage: £1,500 to £6,000+

Furniture is where a conversion becomes specific to the owner. A simple rock-and-roll bed, kitchen pod and loose storage can keep costs controlled. Fixed cabinetry, overhead lockers, slide-out drawers, upholstery, swivel bases and a made-to-measure bed system produce a more integrated result but involve more material, design and labour.

Ply type, edge finish, hinges, drawer runners, catches and worktops all influence cost. The visible cabinet faces are only part of it. Strong mounting points and reliable hardware matter when the vehicle is moving. Labour, certification and contingency: £1,000 to £10,000+

DIY labour can reduce the cash cost, but it is not free if errors mean buying materials twice. Common paid jobs include window cutting, diesel heater fitting, upholstery, electrical work, gas work, vinyl wrapping and cabinetry. A professionally converted van may have a far higher labour element than its parts list suggests.

Keep a contingency of at least 10 to 15 per cent of the conversion-material budget. Delivery charges, replacement trim clips, extra cable, sealant, unexpected rust treatment and revised measurements are normal build costs. Include vehicle insurance changes, habitation checks where relevant, camping equipment and registration or classification administration in the wider project budget.

Where to spend and where to simplify

Spend first on the things that are difficult to change once the van is complete: rust repair, sound treatment, insulation, ventilation, wiring routes, electrical protection and structural mounting. These stages affect comfort, safety and serviceability for the life of the build.

Simplify areas that are easy to upgrade later. Loose storage boxes, removable tables, soft furnishings and some decorative finishes can be replaced without dismantling half the interior. This approach prevents the common mistake of fitting expensive cabinet fronts before the electrical and plumbing layout is proven.

A useful buying sequence is to measure the shell, plan the layout, establish payload and electrical demand, then buy the materials that must be installed behind the lining. Appliances and furniture should follow confirmed dimensions, not assumptions from a sketch.

The most economical conversion is rarely the one with the cheapest individual parts. It is the one where the insulation works with the lining, the appliances fit the furniture, the electrics match the real load, and every component is installed once. Price the whole system before ordering the first sheet of insulation, then leave enough contingency to finish it properly.
