How to Build a Campervan Kitchen Pod Properly

A kitchen pod that looks right on the workshop floor can become a nuisance as soon as it is fitted in a van. Doors clash with the side door, the water container cannot be removed, or a useful drawer turns into dead space once the bed is down. To build campervan kitchen pod units properly, start with the vehicle and the way it will be used, then design the furniture around those limits.
A good pod is not defined by how many appliances it holds. It is defined by secure fixing, workable access, sensible weight distribution and enough storage to make the van usable without constant unpacking. The following approach suits DIY builds, trade conversions and bespoke interiors alike.
Start with the van, not a standard cabinet size
Measure the finished internal space, rather than working from the bare shell or an online vehicle drawing. Insulation, lining, window trims and floor build-up all reduce the usable dimensions. Check the width at floor level and worktop height, as van sides often taper. Also measure around wheel boxes, door apertures and any trim that may affect a cabinet door or drawer.
Decide where the pod will sit before choosing its width. A side kitchen behind the sliding door gives easy outdoor cooking and can leave room for a bed platform. A rear kitchen suits some day vans and weekend layouts, but it needs careful thought around tailgate clearance, weather protection and access when the bed is made up. A full-length side unit offers more storage, although it can make a short-wheelbase van feel narrow.
Make a simple cardboard or timber mock-up at the proposed worktop height. Stand at it, open the doors and walk through the van. This low-cost check will expose problems that a drawing often misses. In particular, confirm that the sliding door can operate freely and that a swivel seat, rock-and-roll bed or drawer system does not conflict with the pod.
Build a campervan kitchen pod around daily use
Before cutting material, list what the kitchen must do on a normal trip. A compact pod may need only a sink, fresh and waste water containers, one hob and dry-food storage. A longer-term touring van may need a compressor fridge, larger water capacity, a fixed gas locker, cutlery drawers and space for pans.
The trade-off is straightforward: every feature takes volume, payload and installation time. A large sink is useful for washing up, but it reduces worktop space. A built-in fridge is convenient, but needs ventilation and makes the pod heavier. Portable containers are easier to service than fixed tanks, while fixed tanks can increase capacity and free up cupboard space.
Keep the items used most often close to hand. The water containers should be removable without unloading the entire kitchen. Hob controls need to be visible and clear of overhanging doors. If a fridge is fitted, allow access to its compressor, fuse and ventilation route. Service access is not an optional finishing detail. Pumps, pipe connections and electrical terminals will need attention eventually.
Choose materials for strength, weight and moisture resistance
Furniture-grade plywood is a common choice because it gives good screw holding and is easier to repair than lightweight board. Birch ply is popular for visible interiors, while a faced board can reduce finishing time. Thickness depends on the span, fixing method and load, but avoid overbuilding. Heavy sheet material, solid timber tops and large appliances can consume payload quickly.
Do not use untreated MDF for a kitchen pod in a campervan. Condensation, wet coats and minor leaks are normal van conditions, and exposed edges can swell rapidly. Any timber edge, cut-out or drilled hole needs sealing, particularly around the sink, water pipes and floor-level cabinetry.
Use a durable worktop surface that can tolerate heat, moisture and regular cleaning. A timber worktop can look good, but it requires proper sealing and ongoing care. Laminated board is practical and easy to wipe down. Whatever material is chosen, fit a heat-resistant barrier or appropriate clearance around the hob in line with the appliance manufacturer's instructions.
Make the structure strong where it matters
A campervan kitchen pod is vehicle furniture, not domestic furniture. It must cope with vibration, braking forces and uneven roads. Assemble the carcass with properly sized fixings, adhesive where suitable and solid corner support. Do not rely on a few small screws into thin sheet material.
The pod must be fixed to substantial vehicle structure or an engineered floor system. Avoid attaching it only to decorative lining panels. Use appropriate brackets and spread the load where possible. Consider the force created by the pod, fridge, water and contents during emergency braking. A cabinet that feels solid when parked may still be unsafe if its mounting points are inadequate.
Keep heavier items low down and close to the vehicle centreline where the layout allows. Fresh water, batteries and a fridge have more effect on handling than lightweight dry-food storage. Check the vehicle's payload before finalising the design, especially if the van also carries a bed system, leisure battery, awning and passengers.
Doors, drawers and latches
Standard household hinges and catches are rarely enough on their own. Use positive latches that will not release over bumps or under braking. Drawer runners should be rated for the expected load and fixed into solid material. Test every door and drawer with weight inside before completing the finish.
Soft-close hardware is useful, but it does not replace a secure travel latch. Make sure handles do not protrude into narrow walkways or catch clothing when entering through the side door.
Plan water, gas and electrics before final assembly
Fit the sink and hob templates before the pod is permanently installed. Cut-outs are easier to make on the bench, and it is much simpler to check clearances underneath before pipes and cables are in place. Leave enough room for the sink waste outlet, water pump hose and any required bends in the pipework.
For a basic removable water system, use separate fresh and waste containers with clearly routed food-grade pipework. The waste container must be at least as easy to remove as the fresh container. A full waste container is heavier, and nobody wants to disconnect hoses in a cramped cupboard after a leak.
Electrical circuits for a fridge, water pump, lighting or USB sockets should be fused correctly and routed away from sharp edges, moving drawer runners and plumbing. Use grommets where cables pass through panels and leave accessible connections for fault finding. If you are not confident designing 12V systems, get the circuit checked by a competent installer.
Gas work needs particular care. If the pod includes a gas hob, use suitable components, provide the required ventilation and arrange a properly secured gas bottle location. A gas locker may need to be sealed from the living space and vented through the vehicle floor, depending on the system. Follow the appliance instructions and current UK requirements. For permanent or more complex installations, use a qualified gas engineer with experience of leisure vehicles.
Allow for insulation, ventilation and the finished interior
Kitchen furniture is normally fitted after sound deadening, insulation, vapour control where used, wiring and wall or ceiling lining. This sequence matters. Removing a fixed pod later to add insulation or repair a hidden cable wastes time and can damage finished surfaces.
The back of the pod should not block planned ventilation paths or access panels. Fridges need the airflow specified by their manufacturer, while hobs need clear space around them. If the kitchen sits against a lined wall, account for the wall thickness and avoid crushing insulation when tightening fixing brackets.

Finish for real use, then test it loaded
Round exposed corners, sand every edge and seal areas likely to see water. Fit a small upstand or splashback if the sink is close to a wall lining. Protect the floor beneath water containers with a removable tray or wipe-clean surface, as minor drips are easier to manage than hidden damage.
Before the first trip, load the pod as it will be used: water containers full, pans in drawers, food in cupboards and fridge operating. Drive locally on mixed roads, then inspect all mounting points, catches, pipework and cables. Listen for rattles and address them now rather than after several hundred miles.
A well-built kitchen pod should feel ordinary once it is finished. Water should be easy to fill, cooking should not require rearranging the van, and nothing should move when the road gets rough. That is the standard worth building towards.
